After Greenland and trade tariffs, US President Donald Trump is threatening European countries once again. If they fail to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, "it will be very bad for the future of NATO", Trump has said. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has made it clear that the US will make its own security decisions, whatever Europe thinks. Admittedly, Europe's own standing has been diminished by its inability to speak with one clear voice on this crisis, as on previous ones. Our guests evaluate the EU's response as US-Israeli strikes on Iran continue.

Eighty years ago, Moldova was struck by a famine that killed more than 150,000 people. Long shrouded in silence, this episode remains a blind spot in the country's history. But gradually, survivors' accounts, combined with the work of researchers, have shed light on a tragedy largely orchestrated by the Soviet authorities of the time. FRANCE 24's Maria Gerth Niculescu and Bastien Renouil report.

The ultra-conservative Catholic organisation Opus Dei was founded a century ago in Spain. Today, it's an international movement with around 90,000 members. In its home country, it has managed to infiltrate all spheres of modern society, from schools to hospitals. Despite serious allegations against it, Opus Dei remains a powerful force in Spain. FRANCE 24's Maude Petit-Jové, Mathilde Lopinski, Emile Roger and Sarah Morris report.

European lawmakers cleared the way Thursday for tougher penalties for irregular migrants and their potential deportation to so-called "return hubs" outside the bloc. The measures, criticised by human rights groups, are part of a tightening of Europe's immigration rules in response to pressure across the 27-nation bloc to curb migration. Russia's spring offensive in Ukraine is expected to focus on the so-called "Fortress Belt" of heavily defended cities in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, which Moscow has repeatedly demanded Kyiv relinquish in return for peace. Speaking on FRANCE 24, retired Vice Admiral of the US Navy Robert B Murrett, says that the region is "a veritable highway for any army that wanted to conduct operations further into Ukraine and beyond".

A NATO report on Thursday said military spending by European allies and Canada rose by 20 percent in 2025. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly demanded that NATO partners significantly boost defence expenditures, with leaders agreeing at a summit last year to spend 5 percent of GDP on defence and related investments by 2035.

In Hungary, mayors now have the right to "select" residents of their towns after a new law was passed last summer. The far-right mayor of Pilis, a town of 12,000 inhabitants, is one of them. One former resident of the town, who was forced to leave, explains why he believes the procedure is discriminatory, particularly towards the Roma minority. Our France 2 colleagues report, with FRANCE 24's Florent Marchais.

The European Parliament on Thursday approved a proposed reform that would allow member states to deport migrants whose asylum applications have been rejected to offshore detention facilities outside EU borders. Migrant arrivals to Europe have declined in recent years, shifting the focus to repatriating people ordered to return to their country of origin.

Zelensky warned such terms would weaken Ukraine’s defences and embolden Moscow, amid uncertainty over future US support despite continued military aid.

François Picard is pleased to welcome Tina Khidasheli, jurist and former defence minister of Georgia. According to Khidasheli, Georgia is suspended between its declared European future and an increasingly authoritarian present. While formally holding candidate status for EU membership, the political reality has shifted toward systemic control, legal ambiguity, and the suppression of dissent. Legal instruments, particularly the foreign agents law, are designed not merely to regulate but to deter, creating an environment where ordinary professional or civic activity risks criminalisation.
