Hezbollah

Hezbollah is a Shiite movement founded in Lebanon in the early 1980s amid the civil war and regional conflict. Supported by Iran from its inception, it has evolved into a powerful organisation with military, political and social dimensions.

Militarily, Hezbollah is regarded as one of the strongest non-state armed groups in the Middle East. It has fought several confrontations with Israel, most notably in 2006, and maintains a significant arsenal as part of its deterrence strategy. Its involvement in the Syrian conflict alongside the Assad government has further expanded its regional role.

Politically, Hezbollah holds seats in parliament and participates in Lebanese governments, giving it considerable influence over national decision-making. This dual role as both an armed group and political actor remains highly controversial, particularly regarding state sovereignty.

Designated as a terrorist organisation by several countries but viewed as a resistance movement by its supporters, Hezbollah continues to shape Lebanon’s political and security landscape. Its actions remain closely tied to regional tensions and power struggles.
