In an exclusive interview with FRANCE 24, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte discussed the evolving role of Europe in global security, emphasising that the alliance is stronger today than it was a year ago. Reflecting on NATO's transformation, Rutte highlighted how the leadership of US President Donald Trump, particularly his push for higher defence spending, played a crucial role in reshaping the alliance's priorities.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Rutte also noted Europe's growing responsibility within NATO, stressing that nations are increasingly taking charge of their own defence. However, he reiterated that the US remains deeply anchored in NATO, which continues to be vital for the security of Europe and the Atlantic. On the war in Ukraine, Rutte stressed the urgency of providing more support, acknowledging that the current pace of aid remains insufficient.
